Dolphin Feeding at Tin Can Bay

From Gympie follow Tin Can Bay Road to Norman Point public boat ramp at Tin Can Bay on the Cooloola Coast where you can feed wild dolphins in their natural environment. The dolphins arrive between 7am to 10am daily at Norman Point with regulated feeding from 8am. Charges apply for fish.

Rainbow Beach Triathlon
3rd Sept - 4th Sept
Rainbow Beach is the host of this fun event which has a variety of triathlons for people of all ages. The weekend offers triathletes the opportunity to race an olympic distance triathlon over two days by completing 2x 'sprint distance' events of 750m swim/20km ride/5km run in consecutive days. The Active Kids Triathlon starts at 1:30 pm on Saturday and events get under way at 8:30 am on Sunday.

Tin Can Bay Seafood Festival

24th & 25th Sept 2011
Tin Can Bay celebrates all that there is to celebrate about seafood every year at the Tin Can Bay Seafood Festival. Saturday kicks off from 9:00am till 4:00pm & Sunday from 10am - 2pm. Live entertainment, helicopter joy rides, cooking demonstrations, market stalls, kids rides & more. Various competitions are also held throughout the day, the famous prawn eating competition always proves popular as does the mullet throwing competition.

Foreshore Bird Walk

Tin Can Bay is home to a truly wonderful variety of birds, even the keenest birdwatcher will be amazed at the variety of bird life in the area. The foreshore provides a range of habitats for an excellent birding experience. Stroll along the bird walk that stretches four kilometres along the Tin Can Bay foreshore, where 137 species of birds have been identified. A pair of binoculars and a good field guide of Australian birds will enhance your walk.

Wildflower Walk

Tin Can Bay is the habitat for a unique collection of spectacular native wildflower species. Wander through the informative wildflower walk on the opposite side of the peninsula from the bird walk to view wildflowers year round. The walk comes alive with colour in Spring and Summer when you can also view Vanilla Lillies, Helmet Orchids, Wallum Boronia and Spade Flowers.

Fishing the Great Sandy Strait from Tin Can Bay

The Strait is made up of sheltered bays, sand flats, beaches and mangrove lined creeks, perfect for fishing, crabbing and prawning. Hire a canoe or dingy from Tin Can Bay and fish the estuaries to catch whiting, flathead, bream, cod, mangrove jack, mackeral and tailor. Enthusiastic anglers can take a trip across the bar to reach the bombies and reefs which yield snapper, squire, pearl perch, tailor, sweet lip, cod and red emperor.

See migratory shorebirds, waders and sea birds along the bird walk

137 species have been sighted on the four kilometre bird walk that stretches along the Tin Can Bay foreshore. This area is part of a Ramsar Wetland of International importance and between September and March of each year at least twenty species of birds migrate from as far as Siberia to rest and feed on the Great Sandy Strait’s mangrove-lined flats. They are recognized as among the most important roosting areas for migratory trans-equatorial shorebirds in Australia. At least 45,000 birds use these wetlands as their summer feeding grounds.

Tin Can Bay is the habitat for Banksias, Westringia and Bottlebrush. Soft pink and white waxflowers, vibrant yellow Guinea flowers and brilliant pink Melaleuca flowers can be seen year round. The walk comes alive with colour in spring and summer when you can also view Vanilla Lillies, Helmet Orchids, Wallum Boronia and Spade Flowers.
